Diamond Education Guide
Your Guide to Diamonds
Buying a diamond is one of the most significant purchases you'll make. At Wave Jewellery, we believe an informed buyer is a confident buyer. This guide covers everything you need to know — from the four qualities that determine a diamond's value, to the difference between lab-grown and natural stones.
The 4Cs: How Diamonds Are Graded
Every diamond in the world is assessed using the same four criteria, known as the 4Cs. Understanding them helps you make the right choice for your budget and priorities.
1. Cut — The Most Important C
Cut refers to how well a diamond has been shaped and faceted — not the shape itself (round, oval, pear), but the quality of the cutting. A well-cut diamond reflects light beautifully, creating the brilliance and sparkle diamonds are known for.
| Cut Grade | What It Means |
|---|---|
| Excellent / Ideal | Maximum brilliance and fire — the finest cut |
| Very Good | Exceptional sparkle, slightly less than Ideal |
| Good | Bright and beautiful, excellent value |
| Fair / Poor | Light leaks from the sides or bottom — less sparkle |

2. Colour — Less Is More
Diamond colour is graded on a scale from D (completely colourless) to Z (noticeable yellow or brown tint). The less colour, the rarer and more valuable the stone. For most settings, a grade of D–J is recommended.
| Grade | Description |
|---|---|
| D – F | Colourless — the rarest and most valuable |
| G – J | Near colourless — excellent value, virtually undetectable |
| K – M | Faint colour — visible in larger stones |
| N – Z | Noticeable colour — significantly lower value |

3. Clarity — Nature's Fingerprints
Clarity measures the presence of internal inclusions (natural imperfections formed during the diamond's creation) and external blemishes. Most inclusions are invisible to the naked eye — only visible under 10x magnification.
| Grade | Description |
|---|---|
| FL / IF | Flawless / Internally Flawless — extremely rare |
| VVS1 – VVS2 | Very Very Slightly Included — inclusions invisible even to experts |
| VS1 – VS2 | Very Slightly Included — excellent choice, eye-clean |
| SI1 – SI2 | Slightly Included — inclusions visible under magnification |
| I1 – I3 | Included — inclusions visible to the naked eye |

4. Carat — Weight, Not Size
Carat is the unit of weight for diamonds (1 carat = 0.2 grams). Larger diamonds are rarer, so price increases exponentially with carat weight. Importantly, two diamonds of the same carat weight can look very different in size depending on their cut and shape.

Wave Jewellery tip: Cut quality has the greatest impact on how a diamond looks. A well-cut 0.9ct diamond will often outshine a poorly cut 1.2ct stone.
Lab-Grown vs Natural Diamonds
This is one of the most common questions we're asked — and the answer is more nuanced than most people expect.
Are Lab-Grown Diamonds Real?
Yes. Lab-grown diamonds are chemically, physically, and optically identical to natural diamonds. They are pure carbon in a cubic crystal structure — the same as any diamond formed in the earth. Even trained gemologists cannot tell them apart without specialist equipment.
| Natural Diamond | Lab-Grown Diamond | |
|---|---|---|
| Composition | Pure carbon | Pure carbon |
| Hardness | 10 (Mohs scale) | 10 (Mohs scale) |
| Appearance | Identical | Identical |
| Formation time | Billions of years | Weeks |
| Price | Higher | 50–80% less |
| Resale value | Historically stronger | Declining as supply grows |
| Environmental impact | Land disruption from mining | High energy use in production |
Which Should You Choose?
There's no universally right answer — it depends on what matters most to you:
- Choose a natural diamond if you value geological rarity, long-term investment potential, and the romance of a stone formed over billions of years.
- Choose a lab-grown diamond if you want a larger, visually identical stone at a significantly lower price point, and long-term resale value is less of a priority.
At Wave Jewellery, we're happy to discuss both options and help you find the right stone for your chosen setting and budget. There's no pressure — just honest, expert guidance from a team with over 25 years in the trade.
